GOLD LEAF

I became interested in gilding early on in my studies in art as I was working to perfect a gold glaze for my ceramic vessels. I started experimenting with various forms of the gold color I was looking for.

More inspiration came in the form of Japanese screens and gilded objects.

On a visit to Japan I was fortunate to gain information on special techniques and unusual applications of the treasured metal.

Ornament, gold metal and pattern tell stories..they mirror the intertwined nature of life, and speak of ancient tales, times of wealth and opulence…spiritual beauty.

The Latin root of ornament..orno—means to adorn..to honor.

The symbolism of gold is timeless. This color and the light it emits speak of good fortune, wealth and enriches any environment with luminous hue and brilliance ..ever changing in any light.

All materials are the best available and each painting represents many many hours of meticulous hand crafted work.

I use special papers, acrylic mediums and Dutch metal leaf and 23 K gold leaf.

Patterns are applied in special processes that have become my “trade secrets”.

Many times, the patterns are rearranged …with each piece picking up its own light.

The gold paintings have a luminous hue and brilliance that is reflected in the smallest amount of light….evening light, firelight, candle light...even moonlight.
