THE ART OF THE BOOK
Artist' books or book-like objets are intended to be works art in themselves. artist hve been active in printing and book production for centuries, but the Artist' book is primarily a late 20th-century form.
In the early 1970s the artists' book began to be recognized as a distinct genre, and with this recognition came the beginnings of critical appreciation of the form. Some works challenge the book format and become sculptural objects.
Book art is accesible to people outside of the contexts
of galleries or museums. Artists' books are made from a variety of materials, including found objects and materials from nature, such as stone, plant material, feathers and leaves.
These Artists' books, by Shirli Marcantel, are an integration of design, handcraft, medium, image, and form, designed to be interactive by providing space for one to create their own art, poetry, and to record life events and adventures.
